Designing an onboarding experience for a AI product

Relevance AI is a no-code platform to analyze unstructured data

💎 Problem analysis

Due to limited resources and time constraints, I was unable to recruit users for testing or interviews. Therefore, I began by conducting my own design reviews to identify the problems that needed to be addressed. The following are the main principles I applied during the design review:

Design review with principles

The homepage of a business or product should make a positive first impression and effectively communicate its value to users. The Call-to-Action (CTA) button on the homepage is crucial, as it ultimately drives user actions. Instead of a generic "Get started" CTA, which may lack clarity for first-time visitors, I opted for a more goal-driven copy, such as "Start your search."

1. Be purposeful and clear

The homepage of a business or product holds significant importance as it serves as the initial point of contact and an opportunity to make a positive first impression on users or customers. One of the crucial elements on the homepage is the Call-to-Action (CTA) button. Regardless of how visually appealing and informative the content may be, the ultimate goal is to guide users towards taking action.

In our case, like many other websites, the CTA on our homepage aimed to increase signups from users. However, the signup rate was disappointingly low, standing at 2.93%.

I recognized the need to improve the copy above the CTA, which was neither concise nor meaningful. I proposed a shorter, fact-driven copy and positioned it below the CTA. This revised copy not only provided reliability and actionability but also conveyed how users could initiate their search after clicking the CTA.

2. Be concise

The outcome of these changes was more significant than anticipated:

  • There was a 200% increase in the signup rate,
    from 2.93% to 6.09%.

🌈 Solution design

During the actual design process, I dedicated most of my time to refining the copies and analyzing data. The design changes in Figma, as depicted in the accompanying image, required only a few minutes.

Quick turn arounds & outcome

Initially, I didn't expect such a substantial outcome and considered it an opportunity to practice UX writing principles. However, the results were undeniably effective, and the 3% increase in client signup rate had a significant impact on our business. Armed with this knowledge, I am now revisiting other pages and CTAs to further enhance user experience and drive business growth.

* I also led an initiative to redesign the homepage for developer talents side (see the image below for my design). I designed the overall direction and all the design materials while collaborating with a copy writer for a more engaging and clearer value driven messages.

🔥 The challenge

Although I wished for more resources to tackle this problem, our circumstances did not allow for it. Consequently, I had to invest a few hours of my own time to devise a quick fix. My approach involved data analysis followed by heuristic design reviews guided by design principles. The provided image showcases the appearance of our homepage at that time, and I will now outline how I designed a rapid solution.
